PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, lissencephaly is a rare gene-linked brain malformation causing the brain to have less or no ridges and folds, making it appear smooth; and
WHEREAS, the absence of folds in the cortex affects the nervous system, resulting in mild to lifethreatening symptoms and developmental delays; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated about 1 in 100,000 babies are born with this condition; and
WHEREAS, individuals living with this condition may also suffer from hypertonia, epilepsy, swallowing disorders, developmental delays, and more; and
WHEREAS, addressing the complex medical needs early in life is imperative to helping families successfully care for their children at home; and
WHEREAS, there is no cure for lissencephaly but treatment with physical therapy, occupational therapy, seizure control management, and supportive care can help individuals with lissencephaly reach their potential level of development; and
WHEREAS, Lissencephaly Foundation Inc, a nonprofit organization, helps support individuals with this rare condition through continued efforts of empowering families and educating communities;
THEREFORE I, DAVID Y. IGE, Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, do hereby proclaim September 8, 2022 as “LISSENCEPHALY AWARENESS DAY” in Hawai‘i and urge the citizens of the Aloha State to join me in raising awareness and support for families who struggle with the challenges of lissencephaly.
