The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a 24/7 single-lane closure on Kūhiō Highway, Route 560, between the Waikoko Bridge and the Lumahaʻi Trailhead near mile post 4.7. This closure will begin on Tuesday, February 11.
The purpose of this months-long closure is to stabilize the hill at the Waikoko slope. Traffic signals will be installed on both sides of the closure area. During the first 24 hours after installation, flaggers will be present to ensure that the signals are functioning correctly. Construction workers will be on-site from Monday through Saturday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with a speed limit of 25 mph enforced through the work zone. The project is expected to take six to eight months, depending on soil conditions.
First responders have been informed about the closure, and protocols are in place for any signal malfunctions. In case of traffic signal issues, individuals can contact Kaua‘i Police Dispatch at 808-241-1711. Electronic sign boards have been set up to inform drivers about the lane closure.
