The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced potential traffic delays as modular homes for wildfire survivors are transported from Kahului to the Ka Laʻi Ola housing site in Lahaina. The transportation will occur nightly at 9 p.m. from Wednesday, February 26 through Friday, February 28.
The convoy of trucks will begin their journey near the Kahului small boat ramp and travel along Kahului Beach Road (Route 3400) to Lahaina. From there, they will head south on Kahului Beach Road, turn left heading east on Kaʻahumanu Avenue (Route 32), then proceed right onto Hāna Highway (Route 36). The route continues with a right turn onto Elmer F. Carvalho Way (Route 3800), linking with Kūihelani Highway (Route 380). At the intersection with Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30), the trucks will turn left and head west towards Lahaina. In Lahaina, they will continue on Honoapiʻilani Highway and make a right turn onto Leialiʻi Parkway near the Lahaina Civic Center to reach the site.
Additionally, on Monday, February 24 and Wednesday, February 26, modular homes will be hauled from Kahului Harbor to a temporary staging site near the Kahului small boat ramp between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. During this time, trucks will travel along Kaʻahumanu Avenue from the harbor heading west before turning right onto Kahului Beach Road adjacent to the small boat ramp.
Motorists should expect traffic slowdowns and stops in both directions due to the size of these modular units. Escorts will accompany the transport process, and highway users are advised to follow all signs and directions from traffic controllers.
