The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) plans to declare a traffic emergency zone on Kalaniana‘ole Highway, Route 72, between Lānaʻi Lookout and Hālona Lookout. This decision follows the Hawaii Revised Statutes § 264-1.5.

Recent heavy rains have raised concerns about a rocky outcropping over the highway. A resident's email prompted HDOT engineers to survey the slope, concluding that rock removal is necessary to prevent potential rockfall and injury.

The declaration of a traffic emergency zone will enable HDOT to expedite procurement and permitting processes for necessary improvements to maintain safe access to the state highway. The public can comment on this designation during a virtual meeting scheduled within 24 hours of the declaration.

The meeting is set for Friday, Feb. 21 at 12 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. Participants can join online or call in at 808-829-4853 with conference pin 988 557 873#.
