The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation has announced virtual public meetings to discuss updates to the Regional Long-Range Land Transportation Plans for Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i Island. These plans, titled “Federal-Aid Highways 2035 Transportation Plans for the Districts of Maui, Hawai‘i, and Kaua‘i,” were last revised in July 2014. The updates are necessary due to changes in population, development, and travel needs across the state.

These regional plans are part of the broader “Statewide Long Range Land Transportation Plan,” which contributes to the “Hawai‘i Statewide Transportation Plan” (HSTP). These documents provide a framework for planning Hawaii's transportation system and guide other important documents like the “Statewide Transportation Improvement Program” (STIP). The HSTP outlines goals and objectives that aim to develop an integrated multimodal transportation system ensuring safe, efficient movement of people and goods throughout Hawai‘i.

The meetings will gather input from stakeholders and communities on each island. This feedback will help shape policies and investment strategies addressing future transportation needs.

For Kaua‘i plans, Microsoft Teams meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, February 25 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and Thursday, February 27 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. For Hawai‘i Island plans, meetings will occur on Wednesday, March 5 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and Thursday, March 6 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Those unable to attend can visit the project website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/other/other-related-links/hawaii-statewide-long-range-transportation-plan/ where they can provide input via an online survey as it becomes available.

Individuals requiring auxiliary aids or services due to disabilities or needing language interpretation should contact the HDOT Public Affairs Office at 808-587-2160 promptly. Requests made two weeks prior have a higher chance of being accommodated.
