The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that live fire training exercises will take place at the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole and the Hilo International Airport. The training is scheduled from February 10 to February 12, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
These exercises are part of an annual requirement set by the Federal Aviation Administration for the recertification of Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) personnel. During this period, ARFF units will practice their response protocols to a simulated emergency involving burning fuel. Safety measures will be strictly followed throughout the exercise.
Residents and visitors may notice smoke and emergency vehicles in the vicinity during these dates, but flight operations are expected to proceed without disruption. For further inquiries, individuals can contact the HDOT Public Affairs Office at 808-587-2160.
