The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a full closure of eastbound lanes on Farrington Highway. This closure is part of efforts under the Maʻipalaoa Bridge project. According to the department, the closures will be implemented on the evenings of Sunday, April 27, and Monday, April 28, between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., in the vicinity of Maʻipalaoa Bridge and Maʻipalaoa Road. The objective is to address a dip in the roadway.
Two-way traffic will be maintained through contra-flow lanes on the westbound side of Farrington Highway during this period. The section of the road affected by the dip was paved previously in 2022 and 2023. Crews plan to conduct the repairs in two phases over two nights. On the first night, they will remove the problematic section, leading to repaving on the second night. Should further time be required, additional work is preliminarily scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, April 29.
Motorists should anticipate rough driving conditions while the top layer of the road is stripped in preparation for repaving. The HDOT advises caution for those traveling through the work area.
Further work, pending final project inspections, may be necessary, potentially extending to a lane closure. Details regarding any additional closures will be shared as plans are finalized. The remaining tasks are expected to be conducted during daylight hours.
The HDOT emphasizes that all work is contingent on weather conditions and is subject to change accordingly. "HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities."
