The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a change in the closure configuration for night work on the Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvement Project. The affected area stretches from the Ola Lane Overpass to the Likelike Highway off-ramp, with changes starting on Monday, March 17.

Nightly closures will occur in both directions on the far-left lane of the H-1 Freeway within the project limits. These closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights, and from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday nights. The closures are necessary for probe and grout work at the Gulick Avenue Overpass foundation located in the median area of the freeway.

Despite these lane closures, all on- and off-ramps within this section will remain open during working hours. HDOT anticipates completing this phase of work by Friday, March 28, weather permitting.

Additionally, daily work continues on Richard Lane and Gulick Avenue with alternating single-lane closures from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., aimed at utility relocation for freeway widening efforts. The widening and retaining wall construction is expected to conclude by July 2025.

The installation of a temporary pedestrian bridge as part of reconstructing and widening the Gulick Avenue Overpass will necessitate complete overnight closures of both directions of the H-1 Freeway beginning November 2025 instead of September as previously stated. Details regarding these future closures will be provided closer to their scheduled time.

The overall completion date for this improvement project is set for January 2027, subject to weather conditions.

HDOT advises motorists to exercise caution while driving through construction zones, adhere to traffic control signs and barriers, and plan commutes accordingly. Special duty police officers will be present to assist with safety measures.
