The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that a new structure for the Kaipāpaʻu Bridge in Hau‘ula will open for two-way traffic on Wednesday, April 2. As they transition vehicular traffic from the temporary bridge to the new structure, one lane in the Kāne‘ohe-bound direction will face intermittent closures of up to five minutes from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The lane shift is expected to be completed in a single day, after which the bridge will continue partial operations.
Traffic will be contra-flowed through the mauka lanes while crews work on finishing the makai side of the new bridge structure and dismantle the temporary bridge. This part of the project does not require additional lane closures, but HDOT noted that future closures might be necessary as the project progresses.
The Kaipāpaʻu Bridge Replacement Project involves constructing a new bridge, relocating water and electrical routes, and stabilizing stream banks. Originally scheduled for completion in May 2025, the project is now anticipated to conclude in January 2026, weather permitting. HDOT attributes the delay to unforeseen utility issues, adjustments in subcontractor work and design changes, as well as unpredictable stream conditions prolonging construction efforts.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution when driving through the area. Additional information about the project can be accessed on the website https://www.kaipapaubridge.com/ or by calling the dedicated hotline at 808-268-1119.
