The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced updates on the Kamehameha Highway Drainage and Safety Improvements, known as the Laniakea Realignment. A single lane closure will occur in the Kahuku-bound direction from Tuesday, March 4, to Friday, March 7. The closure will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. for setting concrete K-rails or jersey barriers along the northbound shoulder near Pohaku Loa Way.

Due to a nearby green sea turtle nesting site, night work is not possible. However, Laniakea Beach will remain accessible during construction. Further lane closures might be necessary for fire hydrant tie-in work in April or May 2025. Sustained lane closures are not expected until early 2026 when the new highway section is integrated.

Traffic holds may occur for material and machinery deliveries. HDOT will inform the public about activities affecting traffic flow or parking.

Construction tasks include removing existing pavement, relocating fencing and utilities, building a two-span bridge over Lauhulu Stream, roadway grading and drainage improvements, connecting elements for the new bridge to the realigned roadway, constructing new pavement, and upgrading signs, guardrails, street lighting, and landscaping. The project is expected to complete by Summer 2026.

Motorists are urged to drive cautiously and heed traffic control signs and barriers while planning commutes ahead of time. Special duty police officers will assist with safety procedures on-site.

All work is weather-dependent; therefore, completion dates may change accordingly.
