The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced potential traffic delays as modular homes for wildfire survivors are transported from Kahului to the Ka Laʻi Ola housing site in Lahaina. The transport is scheduled to occur nightly at 9 p.m., from Wednesday, March 5 through Friday, March 7.
The convoy will start near the Kahului small boat ramp and travel along Kahului Beach Road (Route 3400) to Lahaina. The trucks will proceed south on Kahului Beach Road, turn left heading east on Kaʻahumanu Avenue (Route 32), then right onto Hāna Highway (Route 36). They will continue onto Elmer F. Carvalho Way (Route 3800), head west linking with Kūihelani Highway (Route 380), and finally turn left at the intersection with Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) towards Lahaina. In Lahaina, they will continue on Honoapiʻilani Highway and make a right onto Leialiʻi Parkway near the Lahaina Civic Center to reach the site.
Additionally, on Monday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 5, the modular homes will be moved from Kahului Harbor to a temporary staging area near the small boat ramp between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Trucks will take Kaʻahumanu Avenue from the harbor heading west before turning right onto Kahului Beach Road.
HDOT advises motorists that traffic slowdowns and stops may occur in both directions due to the size of the units being transported. Escorts will accompany the convoy, and drivers should follow all signs and instructions from traffic controllers.
