The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a full closure of Kalaniana‘ole Highway (Route 72) between Kealahou Street and the Makai Research Pier on Sunday, February 2, from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. This closure is necessary to repair a sinkhole that appeared after recent low-pressure weather conditions affected O‘ahu.
On Saturday evening, the Waimānalo-bound lane near Baby Makapu‘u was closed with traffic being alternated through the remaining lane. Starting at 5 a.m. on Sunday, HDOT will completely close both lanes to bring in coral boulders and backfill the damaged section of the highway. Heavy machinery will be used for this process.
There is no alternative route available through this part of Kalaniana‘ole Highway during the closure. Electronic signs will alert drivers about the full closure, and buses as well as emergency vehicles will not have access due to heavy machinery on site.
HDOT plans to provide updates via email and social media platforms. To receive email notifications from HDOT, individuals can sign up at https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/hidot/subscriber/new.
