Common Cause, a nonpartisan watchdog organization, has released its 2024 "Democracy Scorecard," which evaluates members of Congress on their support for voting rights, Supreme Court ethics, and other democratic reforms. According to Virginia Kase Solomón, President & CEO of Common Cause, "Our 2024 Democracy Scorecard shows a surge of support in Congress for reforms that strengthen the right to vote, take back the Supreme Court, and break big money’s grip on our politics." The number of members with perfect scores has more than doubled since 2020.
The scorecard assesses ten legislative items in the U.S. Senate and thirteen in the U.S. House. These include significant bills such as the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
Camron Hurt, Program Manager for Common Cause Hawaii, stated that "The 2024 Democracy Scorecard empowers voters with information to hold their leaders in Washington accountable for a government that works for all." In Hawaii, four members of Congress achieved perfect or near-perfect scores on pro-democracy legislation.
Hawaii is among eight states where both U.S. Senators received perfect scores. The other states are California, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Notably, no Hawaiian member of Congress received low scores.
The Hawaiian delegation's scores are as follows: Senator Mazie Hirono scored 10/10; Senator Brian Schatz also scored 10/10; Representative Ed Case earned a score of 12/13; Representative Jill Tokuda similarly scored 12/13.
Common Cause emphasizes its nonpartisan stance by not endorsing or opposing candidates for elected office.
