4.9% of citizens in Hawaii unemployed in 2021

Hawaii's unemployment rate hit 4.9% among residents aged 16 and 65 years old in 2021. That's 37,152 people out of the 1,453,498 living in Hawaii at the time, according to data U.S. Census Bureau data obtained on Oct. 26, 2023.

The unemployment rate in Hawaii has increased compared to the 4.3% registered in 2020.

The percentage of people unemployed in Hawaii was less than the national unemployment rate of 5.5%.

Of the 727,649 people who had a job during that time, 47,348 were employed in the Armed Forces and 680,301 belonged to the civilian labor force.
