FOIA Request Sent to Hawaii Secretary of State Regarding Spring Elections Candidates for Office on February 5, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Hawaii Secretary of State on February 5, 2025. The request, submitted by Aloha State News, seeks comprehensive information about all candidates running in the upcoming spring elections.

As part of our commitment to providing accurate and comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Aloha State News have requested details under the Hawaii Open Records Law § 91-1 et seq. Specifically, we are seeking a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election, including their first, middle and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation.

In addition to this basic candidate information, we have also requested contact details for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.

We believe that access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities as journalists. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. As such, we have asked for a fee waiver as a media professional.

This request is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that our readers are well-informed about their local government and its activities. We will continue to seek out and report on important information that affects our community.
