Hawaii voters have until 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 5, to cast their ballots in person or return their mail ballots for the 2024 presidential election. As the voting process continues, Common Cause Hawaii emphasizes that it might take several days to finalize the election results.
Camron Hurt, program manager for Common Cause Hawaii, stated: “It’s crucial every voice is heard in this election and that means counting every vote.” He further explained that a slow count indicates accuracy in counting each vote and remarked, “Election night is not results night.”
The process of counting ballots begins with verifying the declarations on ballot envelopes. This involves checking signatures against those on file and ensuring voters are listed as absentee or mail-in voters.
Hawaii is among ten states allowing election workers to start processing and counting ballots before Election Day. Despite this provision, final results may still be delayed.
“Even though we may not know the election winners when we go to bed, what matters most is making sure every eligible voter’s ballot is counted accurately,” added Hurt.
In the 2020 elections, Hawaii saw a voter turnout of 69.6%, resulting in over five hundred thousand ballots being cast. If similar turnout numbers occur this year, officials expect a comparable volume of ballots to be counted.
