The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on May 12 that the Waikomo Stream Bridge on Farrington Highway, located between Keaʻau Beach Park and Keaʻau Homestead Road, is now limited to single-lane, local access for standard passenger vehicles only. This restriction follows a post-storm inspection in which engineers found that soil supporting the bridge’s abutment walls and approach slab had been washed away.
The closure affects emergency vehicles, oversized or overweight vehicles, and commercial vehicles, which are not permitted to cross the bridge to prevent further damage. Repairs began on May 12 and are expected to be completed by May 20. The department said these repairs include installing sandbags and pumping grout into voids beneath the structure.
According to the official website of the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the agency manages a statewide system that includes airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and highways across all six major Hawaiian islands. The department functions as part of the executive branch of state government and collaborates with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, and Federal Highway Administration.
Further updates will be provided when repairs are complete or if there are changes in access for Farrington Highway across Waikomo Stream Bridge.
