The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 2 that one lane on Waiehu Beach Road (Route 3400) in Kahului may be closed starting next week for pavement marking and striping work.

The planned closures are scheduled to begin Monday, April 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays between Lower Main Street and Kahekili Highway (Route 330). Traffic will be alternated in the open lane, with some areas using a lane shift to allow two-way traffic. The department said the project is expected to last up to three weeks and follows recent installations of speed tables, raised crosswalks, and pavement repairs conducted in December.

According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities including multiple airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system. The agency operates as part of the executive branch of the State of Hawaii government according to its official website.

The department also operates 11 commercial service airports, four general aviation airports, nine commercial harbors, and oversees approximately 2,450 lane miles of highways across all six major Hawaiian islands according to its official website. Its services extend throughout these islands according to its official website.

In addition to managing infrastructure projects like this one on Waiehu Beach Road, the Hawaii Department of Transportation collaborates with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and Federal Highway Administration as well as county planning departments according to its official website. The agency aims “to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life,” according to its mission statement on its official site.
