Motorists traveling on Kamehameha Highway near the Laieloa Stream Bridge will experience a shift in traffic patterns starting Thursday, February 26. The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that crews will close both directions of the highway on either side of the bridge to install signage and barriers for a temporary bridge structure. This closure is scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., depending on preparation work, and the transition is expected to take about ten minutes.

The new traffic pattern, which diverts vehicles onto the temporary bridge, will remain in place through January 2027 as part of ongoing efforts to replace the existing Laieloa Stream Bridge. Remaining tasks for this project include building a permanent bridge, repaving, installing guardrails and road markings, removing the temporary structure, and landscaping. Project completion is estimated for April 2027, subject to weather conditions.

For updates about this project, motorists can visit https://laieloabridge.com/ or call the 24-hour hotline at 808-476-0490.

“HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities,” stated HDOT. A full list of lane closures statewide can be found at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/.

HDOT’s mission is to provide a safe and efficient transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while contributing to economic growth and quality of life throughout Hawaii.
