The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a full closure of the Temporary Kapaʻa Bypass Road (Route 5600), from Kūhiō Highway in Wailua to ʻOlohena Road in Kapaʻa. The closure will take place from Wednesday, March 11, through Sunday, March 29, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., affecting Sunday nights to Friday mornings.
According to HDOT, this closure is required for reconstruction of the pavement along the route. Coordination with all first responders has been completed, and traffic control flaggers will be present at both ends of the project area to address any emergencies.
HDOT stated that “work is weather permitting.” For more information about weekly lane closures, the public can visit their website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai/.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities such as airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and highways across all six major Hawaiian islands. As part of the executive branch of the State of Hawaii government, HDOT operates a statewide highway system including 2,450 lane miles across six islands and collaborates with federal agencies like the Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Coast Guard (official website). The department’s goal is to provide a safe and efficient transportation network that supports economic growth and quality of life in Hawaii.
