As the holiday season approaches, Small Business Saturday is gaining prominence as a significant shopping event. This year, it falls on November 26. Last year, spending at independent retailers and restaurants on this day reached an estimated $23.3 billion, marking an 18% increase from the previous year’s $19.8 billion and surpassing the $19.6 billion spent in 2019. These figures were reported by a survey conducted by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

Melissa Pavlicek, Hawaii state director for NFIB, emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses amid current economic challenges. “The loss of so many beloved local businesses underscores the importance of supporting Hawaii vendors,” she said. Pavlicek highlighted that inflation and labor shortages have compounded difficulties for Hawaii sellers.

Small Business Saturday was initiated in 2010 to help Main Street businesses recover from the Great Recession. It has since evolved into one of the major shopping days each year, encouraging support for small, independent businesses that contribute to community well-being.

For shops and restaurants looking to maximize their impact on Small Business Saturday, several strategies are recommended:

– Maintain active social media presence with frequent posts about deals using hashtags like #ShopSmall and #SmallBizSat.
– Highlight merchandise suitable for gifts or offer restaurant specials and gift cards.
– Implement doorbuster deals similar to those used by chain stores.
– Collaborate with nearby businesses for joint advertising efforts or in-store promotions.
– Inform regular customers about Small Business Saturday through signage and flyers.

NFIB has been advocating for small business owners across America since its founding in 1943. The organization remains committed to supporting small and independent businesses nationwide.
