The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a postponement in the change of closure configuration for night work on the Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvement Project. The work, originally scheduled to start on March 17, will now begin in late April due to equipment availability.
Currently, nightly closures remain unchanged with two right lanes closed on the eastbound H-1 Freeway from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Additionally, crews are working daily on Richard Lane and Gulick Avenue with an alternating single lane closure from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, for utility relocation as part of the freeway widening efforts. HDOT expects this phase of widening and retaining wall work to be completed by July 2025.
A complete overnight closure of the H-1 Freeway in both directions is planned for November 2025 to install a temporary pedestrian bridge needed for the reconstruction and widening of the Gulick Avenue Overpass. This task was initially slated for September. Further details will be provided as scheduling progresses.
The entire Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvements Project is projected to conclude by January 2027, weather permitting. HDOT advises motorists to exercise caution, heed traffic control signs and barriers, and plan their commutes accordingly. Special duty police officers will assist with safety measures at the site.
Weather conditions may affect all scheduled work, potentially altering completion dates. For updates on roadwork across Oʻahu or to sign up for weekly lane closure notifications from HDOT, visit their official website.
