Common Cause Hawaii has announced the appointment of Camron Hurt as its new program manager. Hurt will lead efforts to protect elections, expand voting access, enhance government transparency, and reduce the influence of big money in Hawaii politics.
"I am thrilled to be joining this team and bringing my expertise of the great state of Hawaii to Common Cause," said Hurt. "Working with the nonpartisan organization that has been defending our democracy since before I was born is a dream come true. I look forward to championing government transparency by taking up the call for campaign finance reform, and expanding voting access for all Hawaii residents."
Hurt hails from Nashville, Tennessee, and has lived in Hawaii for eight years. His background includes six years in higher education and nonprofit management, along with five years as a corporate and litigation paralegal. His career has focused on advocating for marginalized groups and promoting community-based solutions to systemic issues. He previously led the Supported Decision-Making division and Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Advisory Committee at Disability Rights Tennessee.
"After this year’s legislative session, it’s clear that the islands are in need of a democracy watchdog now more than ever," said Heather Ferguson, Director of State Operations for Common Cause. "We are elated to have Camron leading the way, ensuring that Hawaii has a transparent, accessible, and equitable democracy that works in the best interest of the people – not special interests or the ultra-wealthy."
Hurt resides in Honolulu and holds degrees from Tuskegee University and Hawaii Pacific University. Outside work, he enjoys spending time with his son and coaching soccer and track at Punahou School.
