The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced that crews will begin installing five speed tables on Crater Road (Route 378) between Mile Post 0.35 and 2.0 next week. The work is scheduled from Monday, December 22 to Wednesday, December 24, with alternating single-lane closures between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. During construction hours, traffic will be directed through the open lane.

A map of the locations where the speed tables will be installed is available at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Crater-Road-Speed-Table-Map-.jpg.

According to HDOT, the decision to install speed tables follows observations that most drivers were traveling 15 to 20 miles per hour above the posted speed limit of 30 mph. Some vehicles were recorded going as fast as 40 mph over the limit.

In addition to the speed table installations, paving work is ongoing from Mile Post 0 to 10 along Crater Road. This project also involves closing one lane in active work zones and alternating traffic through the remaining open lane.

HDOT has received approval for this project to continue during part of the Holiday Lane Closure restriction period in order to avoid extended construction delays.

All scheduled work is subject to weather conditions. For updates or changes to the construction schedule, HDOT advises checking its social media pages on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation and on Twitter/X @DOTHawaii.
