The County Department of Public Works announced on Apr. 27 that both lanes of South Kīhei Road will be opened during nonworking hours as repair work continues between Ohukai Road and Kūlanihākoʻi Street.

The revision comes after significant progress was made in repairing damage caused by recent Kona storms. The road will now be closed only from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, with local access permitted during these times.

According to the Department of Public Works, weather permitting, the current phase of repairs is expected to continue through June 20, 2026. During working hours, through traffic should anticipate delays and follow detour signs via Ohukai Road, Kenolio Road, Kaonoulu Street, Piʻilani Highway and Kūlanihākoʻi Street.

This second phase of work focuses on fixing washouts and roadway damage related to the Kona storms. The department said that an earlier phase addressing South Kīhei Road between North Kīhei Road and Ohukai Road has already been completed.
