The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that the mauka shoulder along Pi‘ilani Highway across East Waipuʻilani Road will be closed around the clock starting Monday, January 12. The closure is part of work to prepare for a new intersection that will provide more access to and from the Maui Research & Technology Park Residential Subdivision.
Crews will work behind barricades from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays. During the closure of the northbound shoulder, bicyclists may use a northbound lane on Pi‘ilani Highway or take South Kīhei Road as an alternate route.
Work in the area includes grading, electrical installation, striping, and installing signs. Construction is expected to continue through April 30, 2026. There may be occasional closures of northbound lanes during this period, with notifications provided as needed.
HDOT manages highways such as Pi‘ilani Highway as part of its responsibility for transportation infrastructure across Hawaii’s six major islands. The department oversees airports, harbors, and highways while coordinating with federal and county agencies to maintain and improve transportation systems throughout the state (https://hidot.hawaii.gov). HDOT operates as part of Hawaii’s executive branch government and focuses on ensuring safe and efficient mobility for residents and visitors (https://hidot.hawaii.gov).
