The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a temporary closure of Runway 17-35 at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole. The runway will be closed from 10 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, to 6 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2025. This is part of an ongoing rehabilitation project.

Since February 2025, the runway has been operating at a reduced length of 7,000 feet while maintaining flight operations. It is expected to return to its full length of 11,000 feet by October 2, 2025. The current adjustments are necessary for rehabilitating the runway pavement and making electrical and lighting improvements along with applying new markings.

The scope of the project includes rehabilitation and repair work on both asphalt concrete and Portland cement concrete pavements to align with Federal Aviation Administration design guidelines. More details about the project can be accessed online.

HDOT has coordinated with airlines and other parties to minimize disruption during construction phases. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for specific flight information during this period.

“Please note all work is weather permitting,” HDOT stated in its announcement. They also expressed appreciation for “the public’s patience and cooperation while the needed work to ensure the safe operation of KOA is completed.”
