The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that road repairs and the installation of raised crosswalks and speed tables will take place on Waiehu Beach Road (Route 3400) from Monday, December 8 through Friday, December 12. The work is scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., with one lane closed in various areas during this period. In locations where there is not enough space for two lanes, traffic will be alternated in the open lane.

According to HDOT, four speed tables will be installed between Kūkona Place and Lower Waiehu Beach Road. Additionally, three raised crosswalks are planned at the intersections of Kūkona Place, Kaikoʻo Street, and Kainalu Place. HDOT stated: “HDOT is installing the speed tables and raised crosswalks as a speed management strategy on this corridor, based on data showing the majority of drivers are exceeding the posted speed limit of 30 mph by 10 mph or more.”

The new raised crosswalks will include combined Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon and Street Light units to enhance pedestrian safety. The installations will start near Waiehu Beach Road’s intersection with Lower Waiehu Beach Road and progress toward Kahului Beach Road.

Pavement crack sealing is also scheduled for Waiehu Beach Road from Kahului Beach Road to Kahekili Highway. This maintenance aims to extend pavement life, beginning at the intersection with Kahului Beach Road and continuing toward Kahekili Highway.

HDOT urges motorists: “Please obey all traffic controls and drive carefully around the workers.”

All construction activities are subject to weather conditions. Updates about schedules or changes can be found on HDOT’s social media pages at https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation or via Twitter/X @DOTHawaii.
