Hawaii collected $1.7 billion in sales and gross receipt taxes during the first quarter of 2024, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Quarterly Summary of State and Local Taxes.

Overall, Hawaii’s combined tax revenues reached $2.5 billion during the year, as of the first quarter of 2024.

Sales and gross receipt taxes include taxes on licenses, alcohol, amusements, insurance, fuel, parimutuels, public utilities and tobacco products.

In addition to detailed tax revenue data from each state, the Quarterly Summary of State and Local Government Tax Revenue includes an estimate of state and local government tax revenue at a national level.

The Census Bureau cautions that it sets the tax classifications among the survey categories, and they may differ from the classifications set by state governments.

Hawaii sees 3.5% rise in insurance premiums taxes collections in 2024

Out of the $10.6 billion in total tax revenue collected by Hawaii in 2024, $217.9 million came from insurance premiums sales taxes, representing an increase from the previous year, when the total was $210.5 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections (STC).
