The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced an overnight closure of Pu‘unēnē Avenue in Kahului, scheduled from Thursday, May 15 to Friday, May 16. The road will be closed between Wākea Avenue and Papa Avenue for restriping work as part of the ongoing Pu‘unēnē Avenue Improvements project.

The closure will take place from 9 p.m. on May 15 until 5 a.m. on May 16. During this time, crews will work on shifting lanes in preparation for the next phase of the project. Residents living on East Kauaʻi Street, Kūʻula Street, and ʻAiʻai Street will have access through East Papa Avenue, with traffic controllers assisting those within the work zone.

Detours are planned via Lono Avenue, Hina Avenue, and West Papa Avenue. Further details can be found at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/SB-NB-Detour-TCPs_Wakea_Papa-1.pdf.

Electronic message boards at the work zone will display road closure notifications. After the striping is completed, changes include closing the southbound merge lane on Pu‘unēnē Avenue at Wākea Avenue and shifting both northbound and southbound lanes along with the middle turn lane eastward near Kahului Baptist Church. Traffic flow in both directions will be maintained.

Highway users are advised to follow signs and directions from traffic controllers during this period.
