Puʻunēnē Avenue in Kahului, Hawaiʻi, will be closed overnight from December 8 to December 12 for paving work. The closure will take place each night from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., with the final closure ending at 4:30 a.m. on Friday, December 12. The affected area is between Papa Avenue and Kūihelani Highway.

According to the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT), crews will be working on improvements as part of the Puʻunēnē Avenue project. The project aims to improve traffic flow and enhance vehicle and freight movement by adding more lanes and updating traffic signals along this main route in central Maui.

During the closures, there will be no right turns from West Papa Avenue onto Puʻunēnē Avenue and no left turns from East Papa Avenue onto Puʻunēnē Avenue. Residents living on East and West Hawaiʻi streets should use East Papa Avenue for access. Access to Puʻukani Street will be available via Hukilike Street.

For those traveling to Kahului from Maui Veterans Highway, drivers are advised to detour by turning right onto Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way and then left onto Dairy Road due to a roadblock at the intersection of Maui Veterans Highway and Puʻunēnē Avenue. Travelers heading to Wailuku can turn left onto Kūihelani Highway, with Maui Lani Parkway providing an additional route into Wailuku or Kahului.

Construction barriers will be placed at the right turn from Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way onto Puʻunēnē Avenue and at the left-turn lane from Kūihelani Highway onto Puʻunēnē Avenue for safety during the work.

“All work is weather permitting. For construction schedule updates or changes, see HDOT’s social media pages on https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation and on Twitter/X @DOTHawaii,” stated HDOT.
