Portions of Haleakalā Highway (Route 36A) and Kalā Road near Kahului Airport will be closed overnight for paving, according to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT). The closure is scheduled from 10 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, until 5 a.m. on Sunday, September 21.

During this period, the west side of Haleakalā Highway at the Hāna Highway intersection will not be accessible to traffic. Motorists needing access to Kahului Airport are advised to use Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way (Route 3800), which will serve as the closest available entrance.

Kalā Road will also be closed on the east side near the entrance and exit for the airport cargo area, with no through traffic allowed. However, access to airport cargo operations remains available via Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way and through Haleakalā Highway near Costco.

A map showing details of the closure can be found at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/NEW-OGG-TCP.jpg.

The department advises drivers to follow all posted signs and traffic controls and exercise caution around workers during construction.

For updates or changes regarding the construction schedule, information is available on HDOT’s social media pages: Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation and Twitter/X @DOTHawaii.
