KAHULUI, Hawai‘i – The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that paving on Crater Road (Route 378) will start on Monday, July 14, with an expected completion in October.

The paving project will begin at Mile Post 10.15 near the entrance to Haleakalā National Park and proceed down to Mile Post 0 near Kekaulike Avenue in Kula. Initial work will focus on the section between Mile Post 10.15 and 7.5.

During the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, one lane will be closed at a time, with traffic alternating through the open lane. The bike lane, shoulder, and sidewalk within the work zone will also be closed.

Crews are tasked with removing the existing top layer of pavement, reconstructing the roadway, and repaving the lanes.

At the conclusion of this project, speed tables will be installed between Mile Posts 0.35 to 2.0 due to some vehicles being recorded traveling up to 40 mph above the posted speed limit of 30 mph. Speed limits around Crater Road’s turns are set at 15 mph for safe navigation.

Further details about speed table construction will be provided closer to its anticipated start date in October.

For updates or changes in construction schedules, HDOT advises checking their social media pages on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation and Twitter/X @DOTHawaii.

Weekly lane closure information is available at: https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/

Motorists are advised to plan accordingly and expect delays while following all traffic control devices and driving carefully around workers.
