Puʻunēnē Avenue in Kahului will be closed overnight next week for road work, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT). The closure affects the section between Wākea Avenue and Kūihelani Highway.

The initial closure is scheduled from 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 27, until 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28. For the remainder of the week, nightly closures will run from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., ending at 4:30 a.m. on Friday, October 31.

The project includes paving, utility line improvements, and median work. Residents living near Puʻunēnē Avenue can access their homes via Wākea Avenue with assistance from workers directing traffic.

Travelers heading to Kahului from Maui Veterans Highway will need to detour by turning right onto Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way and then left onto Dairy Road due to a roadblock at the intersection of Maui Veterans Highway and Puʻunēnē Avenue. Those traveling to Wailuku may turn left onto Kūihelani Highway; Maui Lani Parkway provides another route into both Wailuku and Kahului.

Construction barriers will be placed at key intersections to facilitate safe work zones.

A map detailing detour routes is available at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Puunene-for-release.pdf

This work is part of ongoing improvements intended to ease traffic congestion and enhance freight movement along one of central Maui’s main roads by adding lanes and updating traffic signals.

All scheduled work depends on weather conditions. Updates or changes can be found on HDOT’s social media pages at https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation and Twitter/X @DOTHawaii.
