The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that one southbound lane on Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500) in Kahului, across from McDonald’s, will be closed next week for utility work related to the Hale Pilina affordable housing complex.

The closure will affect the right southbound lane and the adjacent sidewalk from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20 through Friday, Jan. 23. The work zone is located in front of the complex next to the Kahului Post Office. If necessary, work may continue from Monday, Jan. 26 to Wednesday, Jan. 28.

Crews are scheduled to install an electrical vault at the north corner of the property near the post office. One southbound lane will remain open for vehicles traveling through the area, while northbound lanes will not be affected by this construction activity. Pedestrians are advised to use the sidewalk along the northbound lanes on Puʻunēnē Avenue during this period.

HDOT asks drivers to follow all traffic controls and exercise caution around workers.

HDOT is a state agency responsible for overseeing transportation systems across Hawaii’s six major islands, including highways such as Puʻunēnē Avenue. The department manages airports, harbors and highways while working with federal and county agencies to maintain infrastructure and ensure safe mobility throughout Hawaii (official website). HDOT aims to provide efficient transportation options that support economic growth and quality of life for residents.
