Nightly closures of the Hālawa and H-3 Freeway off-ramps from the westbound Moanalua Freeway will resume on Sunday, October 19, according to an announcement from the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT). The closures are necessary for repaving work at the Hālawa Interchange.
The scheduled work hours are Sunday evenings from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. the next day, and Monday through Friday evenings from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. During these times, motorists will be detoured via the westbound H-99 Stadium/ʻAiea Exit to access the H-3 freeway.
The closure is expected to continue through Wednesday, November 26, excluding weekends and holidays. Special duty police officers will be present for traffic control and safety, and electronic message boards will notify drivers about the planned closure.
After ramp work is completed, crews will begin repaving in the three left lanes of westbound H-201 Moanalua Freeway between Moanalua Gardens and the Hālawa Interchange. This additional work is scheduled Sundays through Fridays from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Remaining tasks include striping on the westbound Moanalua Freeway between Middle Street off-ramp and Hālawa Interchange, as well as paving and restriping on eastbound Moanalua Freeway between the H-3 overpass and Red Hill. HDOT states that all further work announcements will be made as schedules are set.
The estimated completion date for all related projects is January 2026. HDOT notes that all work is weather dependent and schedules may change accordingly.
“HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities.”
