The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that the Wailua River Bridge on Kūhiō Highway (Route 56) will be fully closed nightly from Tuesday, December 16 through Friday, December 19. The closure will take place between Kuamoʻo Road and Wailua Marina Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

During these hours, southbound drivers heading toward Līhuʻe will be redirected to a contraflow lane on the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Bridge, also known as the Plantation Bridge. This bridge will have one lane open in each direction, northbound and southbound.

HDOT stated that “these closures are necessary for the contractor to pour concrete for a structural element of the bridge.” The department also outlined remaining work for the Wailua Bridge Repairs project, which includes 11 additional concrete pours, spall repairs, and paving. The project is scheduled for completion in March 2026.

Variable message boards have been placed along Kūhiō Highway to inform drivers about the upcoming changes. Information about scheduled lane closures on Kauaʻi can be found on the HDOT website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai/.
