The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a nightly full closure of the Wailua River Bridge over Kūhiō Highway (Route 56) between Kuamoʻo Road and Wailua Marina Road. The closure will take place from Monday, January 5 through Friday, January 9, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

During this period, southbound drivers heading toward Līhuʻe will be detoured to a contraflow lane on the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Bridge, which serves as the southbound route.

“These closures are necessary for the contractor to pour concrete for a structural element of the bridge. Remaining tasks for the Wailua Bridge Repairs includes 11 concrete pours, spall repairs and paving. The Wailua Bridge Repair Project is expected to be completed in March 2026,” HDOT stated.

Variable message boards have been set up along Kūhiō Highway to inform road users about the upcoming closures.

HDOT manages airports, harbors and highways across all six major Hawaiian islands and works with federal and county agencies to maintain transportation infrastructure. According to its official website, HDOT’s mission is to ensure safe and efficient mobility supporting economic growth and quality of life throughout Hawaii.
