The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that the Wailua River Bridge on Kūhiō Highway (Route 56), between Kuamoʻo Road and Wailua Marina Road, will be closed nightly from Monday, January 12 through Friday, January 30. The closures will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. During these hours, southbound drivers heading toward Līhuʻe will be detoured to a contraflow lane on the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Bridge, also known as the Wailua Plantation Bridge.

According to HDOT, “These closures are necessary for the contractor to pour concrete for a structural element of the bridge. Remaining tasks for the Wailua Bridge Repairs include 11 concrete pours, spall repairs and paving. The Wailua Bridge Repair Project is expected to be completed in March 2026.”

Variable message boards have been placed along Kūhiō Highway to inform road users about the upcoming closures.

HDOT stated that additional intermittent closures may occur Mondays through Fridays as work continues. Updates on scheduled lane closures will be posted weekly at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai/.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation manages airports, harbors and highways across all six major Hawaiian islands and coordinates with federal and county agencies to maintain transportation infrastructure. More information about its responsibilities can be found on its official website.
