The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that nightly full closures of the Wailua River Bridge on Kūhiō Highway (Route 56), between Kuamoʻo Road and Wailua Marina Road, will continue through March. The closures will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Friday.
During these hours, southbound drivers heading toward Līhuʻe will be rerouted to a contraflow lane on the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Bridge, also known as the Wailua Plantation Bridge. The ongoing closures are required for contractors to rehabilitate concrete supports and carry out paving work on the mauka bridge.
HDOT stated that “the original scope of the Wailua Bridge Repair Project is expected to be completed in March; however, HDOT is planning to add paving of the highway between North Leho Drive and Kuamo‘o Road to the scope of the bridge project. Should this paving be successfully added to the project, the estimated completion could extend to April.”
To inform motorists about these changes, variable message boards have been set up along Kūhiō Highway. Additional intermittent closures may occur Mondays through Fridays as needed for remaining tasks. Updates regarding scheduled lane closures are provided weekly by HDOT for Kauaʻi roadwork at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai/.
