The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on April 17 that night work will begin April 22 for the H-1 and H-2 Freeway Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation project near Makakilo. Crews will close two far-right lanes on the westbound H-1 Freeway approaching and at the Makakilo Drive off-ramp from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., with this phase expected to last two to three weeks before shifting to eastbound lanes.

This project aims to remove existing concrete pavement and replace it with 325 precast concrete panels, affecting sections at the Makakilo Interchange, Kunia Interchange, and the H-1/H-2 Merge. All ramps will remain open during construction. The scheduled work days are Sunday through Thursday nights, typically from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., but will shift to a later start time of 9 p.m. when crews move into the Kunia area due to prior feedback and survey observations.

The estimated completion date is September 2026, but all schedules depend on weather conditions and may change as needed. Special duty police officers will be present for traffic control, electronic message boards will provide closure information, and motorists are urged by HDOT officials to drive cautiously and follow posted signs.

According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities including airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system across all six major Hawaiian islands. The department operates as part of Hawaii’s executive branch government structure.

The department oversees eleven commercial service airports, four general aviation airports, nine commercial harbors, and about 2,450 lane miles of highways according to its official site. It works in partnership with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), as well as county planning offices.
