Puʻunēnē Avenue in Kahului, Hawaiʻi will be closed for two nights next week as contractors work on traffic signals at the intersection with Wākea Avenue. The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced that the closure will take place nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., beginning Tuesday, March 10 and ending Thursday, March 12. The road is scheduled to reopen each morning at 4:30 a.m.
During the closure, drivers can access Puʻunēnē Avenue by taking West Wākea Avenue westbound, heading south on Lono Avenue, and then turning left onto West Kauaʻi Street. A map showing the detour route is available online.
The signal work is part of a larger improvement project on Puʻunēnē Avenue intended to improve traffic flow and enhance circulation for vehicles and freight by adding lanes and updating traffic signals along this central Maui route.
HDOT notes that all construction is weather dependent. Updates or changes to the schedule will be posted on HDOT’s social media pages on Facebook and Twitter/X @DOTHawaii.
