The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is inviting community members to attend the annual Emergency Preparedness Expo on May 9 at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center in Kahului. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free for all attendees, according to an April 22 announcement.
The expo aims to educate the public about emergency preparedness and provide resources that can help residents build resilience across Maui Nui. This comes as MEMA highlights recent challenges faced by the county, including wildfires, tsunami warnings, and multiple storms within a single month.
“Maui County has faced significant challenges in recent years, including wildfires, tsunami warnings and, more recently, three storms within a single month,” MEMA Administrator Amos Lonokailua-Hewett said. “Our Emergency Preparedness Expo 2026 is one way for residents to learn readiness tips for floods, tsunamis, wildfires and other emergencies.”
Lonokailua-Hewett also said: “Our MEMA motto, ‘Always Preparing, Stronger Together: Building a Resilient Maui Nui,’ reflects the understanding that preparedness is a shared kuleana. When we come together as one community, we strengthen our resilience, support one another in times of hardship, and ensure our ʻohana, neighbors and communities are better equipped for future emergencies.”
Attendees at the expo can expect educational presentations on preparedness topics such as floods and wildfires; guest speakers; information booths from more than thirty partnering agencies; prizes; giveaways; and assistance with signing up for MEMA Alerts or downloading the Genasys Protect app.
