The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 24 that single lane closures will take place at the roundabout on Piʻilani Highway (Route 31) next week as crews install raised crosswalks. The work will occur overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., beginning Monday, April 27, and concluding at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29.
The temporary closures will affect both northbound and southbound lanes on the Wailea side of the roundabout, but at least one lane in each direction will remain open to allow through traffic. According to officials, these improvements are intended to enhance pedestrian safety at the current crossings.
Since its opening in 2023, the multi-lane roundabout at Piʻilani Highway and Kūlanihākoʻi Street has been used to manage vehicle speeds and traffic flow efficiently. The new raised crosswalks add another safety measure alongside rapid rectangular flashing beacons (RRFBs), which are set to be activated later.
All construction is weather permitting. Updates or changes to the schedule can be found via HDOT’s social media pages on Facebook and Twitter/X @DOTHawaii.
