The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced its destination sign maintenance plan for the H-1 Freeway, starting in April 2025. The work will necessitate the closure of two right lanes on the eastbound H-1 Freeway near Kualakaʻi Parkway each night from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., Monday through Thursday. The work is expected to last about one month, weather permitting.
The project will then transition in May 2025 to westbound Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City, targeting destination signs near the Waipahu off-ramp. This phase will involve closing a single left lane on Monday through Thursday evenings during the same hours. Following this, crews will focus on the westbound Kamehameha Highway, working on the Waiʻanae and Mililani/Wahiawā off-ramps with a single right lane closure from May through June 2025.
A subsequent stage of the work will commence in July 2025 and span four months, affecting the Nimitz Highway near the Joint Base Pearl Harbor/Hickam off-ramps. Here, a nightly single lane closure will be in effect, possibly affecting either direction from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., Monday through Thursday.
The HDOT details that the scope involves concrete footing construction, drilled shafts, and concrete pours. Once the footing and shaft work are completed, the installation of new destination signs will follow with updated directional markings and Hawaiian spellings for destinations. Some works may necessitate full road closures, which will be announced as scheduled. The entire project is projected to conclude in Fall 2026.
Motorists are advised by HDOT to exercise caution, respect traffic controls, and plan commutes in advance. Special duty police officers will be on-site to assist with safety protocols.
