Lane closures on South Puʻunēnē Avenue in Kahului will be adjusted starting Tuesday, August 12, as part of ongoing sewer line work for the Hale Pilina affordable housing project. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced that one lane in each direction will be closed in the area fronting McDonald’s on South Puʻunēnē Avenue, with work taking place in the turn pocket and inside lanes. One lane will remain open for traffic in both directions, but left turns from the open lanes or adjacent properties will not be allowed. Details of the new configuration can be viewed at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Day-TCP-2-Puunene.jpg.

The updated 24/7 lane closures are expected to continue through Friday, August 22. Work hours under this new setup are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 12 through Thursday, August 14. No work is planned for Friday, August 15 due to the Statehood Day holiday. Crews will resume on Saturday, August 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and then again from Monday, August 18 through Friday, August 22 during the same hours.

Until Tuesday, August 12, two southbound lanes and the turn lane fronting McDonald’s will remain closed around the clock. Southbound traffic continues to be diverted into one northbound lane while one northbound lane remains open for regular use. A map showing this configuration is available at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Puunene-TCP-.jpg.

The construction supports development of the Hale Pilina affordable housing complex at 150 South Puʻunēnē Avenue, directly across from McDonald’s.

For updates or changes to the construction schedule, HDOT advises checking their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation and Twitter/X @DOTHawaii. Weekly information about statewide lane closures is also posted at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/.

“Please plan accordingly and expect delays. Also follow all traffic control devices and drive carefully around the workers,” HDOT stated.
