Roadwork is set to begin on December 1 at the intersection of Kula Highway (Route 37) and Ōmaʻopio Road, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT). The project will require closure of the northbound lane at the intersection from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, excluding state holidays. Traffic will be alternated through the open lane during these hours.
In addition, the shoulder along the northbound lane at this intersection will remain closed around the clock for the duration of construction, which is expected to continue until October 2026. Due to this closure, bicyclists may need to use the travel lane. HDOT reminds drivers that state law requires a minimum clearance of three feet when passing cyclists in these conditions. The speed limit through the construction zone has been set at 25 mph.
The project involves installing a traffic signal, highway lighting, guardrail upgrades, creation of left turn storage on Kula Highway, embankment widening, and building a retaining wall.
Lane closure updates are posted weekly on Fridays for the following week at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/. For further information or changes in schedule due to weather or other factors, updates can also be found on HDOT’s social media pages at https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation and Twitter/X @DOTHawaii.
“All work is weather permitting. For construction schedule updates or changes, see HDOT’s social media pages on https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation and on Twitter/X @DOTHawaii,” said an HDOT spokesperson.
