The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on April 2 that Kūhiō Highway (Route 560) on Hanalei Hill will be fully closed between Hanalei Plantation Road and ʻŌhiki Road during the nights of Monday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 7 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. The closure is required for crews to reconstruct the existing pavement on the Hanalei approach to the Hanalei Bridge. According to the department, this work was delayed due to a shortage of materials and weather conditions.

This closure affects residents and travelers who rely on this section of highway as a key route in Kauai. The department said that if work is completed ahead of schedule, the highway will reopen sooner than planned. There may also be additional closures in the future for asphalt treatment needed on the Princeville side of Hanalei Bridge.

First responders have been notified about these closures and will have access through the work area in case of emergencies. Variable message boards are being used to keep drivers informed about changes or updates regarding roadwork.

According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities including multiple airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system. The agency functions as part of the executive branch of state government according to its official website. It operates eleven commercial service airports, four general aviation airports, nine commercial harbors, and maintains approximately 2,450 lane miles across all six major Hawaiian islands according to its official website.

The department aims “to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life,” according to its official website. Its services extend across all six major islands according to its official website, collaborating with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Highway Administration as well as county planning departments according to its official website.
