The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a full nightly closure of Kūhiō Highway (Route 560) on Hanalei Hill, between Hanalei Plantation Road and ʻŌhiki Road. The closures will take place Monday through Friday, starting February 2 and continuing until February 13, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
According to HDOT, the closure is required so that crews can reconstruct the existing pavement on the Hanalei approach to the Hanalei Bridge. The department stated that if work is finished ahead of schedule, the highway will reopen sooner than planned. There will be no closures on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.
HDOT noted that there may be future closures for asphalt treatment on the Princeville side of Hanalei Bridge.
First responders have been informed about the closure and will have access through the work area in emergencies. Variable message boards will be used to keep the public updated.
