The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on April 5 that the Kolekole pass emergency route will be open from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday, April 6, for drivers leaving the Wai‘anae Coast. The move is intended to help manage traffic while the Board of Water Supply continues repairs on a damaged water main under Farrington Highway between Piliokahi Avenue and Pohakunui Avenue.

This temporary measure comes as eastbound access along Farrington Highway remains limited due to ongoing work. As of Sunday evening, only one lane heading toward Wai‘anae was available, with Honolulu-bound vehicles being detoured through Laumania Avenue and Pohakunui Avenue before reconnecting with Farrington Highway. The Board of Water Supply is working to restore full access in time for the Monday morning commute but advises motorists to use caution over areas where repairs are underway.

The emergency route through Kolekole Pass will allow travel in one direction only, ending at Schofield Barracks. Drivers are advised that traffic may be heavier than usual on connecting roads such as Wilikina Drive and Kunia Road.

According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages multiple airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system. The department functions as part of the executive branch of state government and operates across all six major Hawaiian islands.

The department also collaborates with federal agencies including the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, and Federal Highway Administration as well as county planning offices according to its official website. Its mission is “to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life,” according to its official website.

Looking ahead, officials say they will continue monitoring conditions during water main repairs and adjust traffic management plans if needed.
